Percussion designers Penland and Sammons join Music City

Award-winning Santa Clara Vanguard staff members Matt Penland and Tyler Sammons are joining the Music City Drum Corps as percussion designers for the 2019 season. Matt will serve as the arranger for the percussion battery. Tyler will join Matt as arrangers for the front ensemble.

Matt Penland is a percussionist in the U.S. Air Force Band and serves on the instructional staff for Santa Clara Vanguard and George Mason University Indoor Drumline. He earned a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from the University of North Texas and a Master of Music Performance degree from Northwestern University. As a performer, Matt marched with Santa Clara Vanguard, Phantom Regiment, Carolina Crown and Crossmen. In 2011 he was the tenor champion in the DCI Individual and Ensemble competition.

Tyler Sammons is the percussion director at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas and serves on the instructional staff for Santa Clara Vanguard. He graduated in 2011 from the University of North Texas with a degree in percussion performance and music theory. Tyler was a marching member in both Phantom Regiment and Crossmen. He has taught at several prestigious schools across the country including Marian Catholic, LD Bell, Hebron (TX) and Tom Glenn High School (Leander, TX).
