Music City Youth in the Arts announced today the cancellation of the Music City Drum Corps 2020 summer tour. The Nashville-based nonprofit’s action is in coordination with Drum Corps International and the decision by the entirety of DCI’s national membership corps to cancel the tour. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic made impossible DCI’s ability to plan a safe and healthy experience for corps members, volunteers, staff and fans this summer.
“Our board of directors is proud to be a part of an activity that considers member experience, especially health and safety, so important that we sacrifice an entire season rather than endangering our most precious resource, our people,” said MCYA Board President, Tracy Rode.
School districts across middle Tennessee are still closed in accordance with state directives making it impossible to host outside organizations. Planning has already begun at MCYA for meeting needs in the coming months.
“With the uncertainty of when we might be able to begin hosting student events we will be reducing our costs dramatically over the coming weeks,” Executive Director Joe Roach said. “It is my hope once schools are back in session we will schedule a variety of clinics, classes and performance opportunities. In the meantime, MCYA is planning a variety of online programs to continue driving its mission.”
The priority, as stated in DCI’s public announcement, “above all else, the entire DCI community remains unified in its commitment to preserve the health, safety, and well-being of everyone involved in the activity.”
MCYA looks forward to announcing the Music City 2021 Summer Tour and several new local initiatives in the coming months. Until then please take care of each other.
